A Blind Spot: Vacancy and Decay in Psychiatric Hospitals

Preserving Healthcare Heritage

In the eighties of the last century, a change took place in the thinking about psychiatric care. Patients had to be taken care of within society itself. As a result, a lot of monumental psychiatric clinics and hospitals as well as their park-like settings have lost their former function. Sometimes they have a ruinous look. Only a few managed to survive by giving it a new function. In this session, we will discuss strategies on how to preserve our health heritage. What chances lie ahead? How do we wash off the stigma associated with psychiatric wards? Several successful examples will be presented.
